Virtual Birds, October 29, 2020

You can scroll down to the video directly below if you like - but a couple of notes from this morning's meeting before that.

Dan Kennelly talked about the story that's popped up about a Nissan Leaf owner in BC that points to a real issue for the used- electric-vehicle market and future: battery replacement after issues. You can see the story here: https://driving.ca/nissan/auto-news/news/b-c-leaf-owners-plight-highlights-difficulty-in-replacing-ev-batteries

Tom Olson had to pick up a new pair of glasses with graduated lenses after leaving his behind in Invermere and share the tip that instead of the usual $600-$700 he ordered through Zenni and paid $100. For non-graduated lenses, he's heard of people picking them up for as little as $39. Their site is here: https://ca.zennioptical.com/

Tom also had a great article to share as a result of the question uppermost on his mind most days in relation to all things COVID: Why? Definitely worth a read: https://thecritic.co.uk/issues/november-2020/welcome-to-covidworld/

Andy Lockhart mentioned a terrific book for anyone who likes to look for facts to support the case for and against some of the dominant arguments in society - especially some of the nonsense (sorry - that's my inside voice) being peddled by the "Woke folk".

Written by Wilfred Reilly, and African-American prof at Kentucky State University Taboo: 10 Facts (You Can't Talk About) is available everywhere, including Pages Books in Kensington: https://www.pageskensington.com/?q=h.tviewer&using_sb=status&qsb=keyword&qse=p5_EarT6dOMigWeQQgmFMg

Matt Dart mentioned a new possibility for client entertainment after a meeting: Screen Golf. Definitely worth a look: http://screengolf.ca/. Matt's headed for eye surgery soon - good luck with that!

Michael McLennan made a post summer, pre-hunting season appearance and among other things mentioned a partnership with an Eastern company called CAD Micro to enlarge their footprint into the 3D Printing world. When you visit the TRS Officeware site, there's a pop-up that takes you to more information. If you haven't dropped in on Michael's business in a while, it's always worth a visit: https://www.trsofficeware.ca/

The video will tell the tale of who provided this tip - I believe it was Jim Bladon - there’s a new brewery whose beers are terrific, called Bitters Sisters. As good as the beer was, the menu is a standout as well since the executive Chef in charge of the SAIT cooking program is in charge. Jim also said it's worth asking your server the story behind the name. They're at 510 Heritage Dr SW, and on the web at: https://bittersisters.co/

On the drinkables side of things, Don Doolan also had a tip. A new store called Wine and Beyond at Sage Hill in the northwest part of the city is something else! I can heartily second that. As soon as I saw the store on the web site, I realized I'd been in there to get a hard-to-find wine at 2/3 the price I'd seen it for at Liquor Depot. You can get location and hours, etc. from https://www.wineandbeyond.ca/

Last note before the video, podcastaholic, Ross Mikkelsen had two new things for us to explore. One was the Sam Harris podcast Making Sense - and in particular this episode: A PANDEMIC OF INCOMPETENCE
A Conversation with Nicholas Christakis. You can listen to this episode and listen to the podcast using this link: https://samharris.org/podcasts/222-pandemic-incompetence/

His second tip came is a podcast called No Compromise. Ross's comments about how these guys feel the NRA is weak were pretty funny. It's from the peerless podcast producers at NPR. Here's the brief description:

"Discover a social media empire with an unapologetic vision of gun rights—generating millions of likes, follows, and dollars. From Guns & America, reporters Lisa Hagen of WABE and Chris Haxel of KCUR expose how three brothers from the most uncompromising corner of the gun debate are turning hot-button issues into donations and controversy."

You can get to the podcast here: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510356/no-compromise

And now....the video.
