October 8th

Next week’s guest is Bryce Walker, CFA. He’s the VP of Western Canada for Connor, Clark and Lunn Funds Inc. Bryce’s presentation is about hedge funds: strategies for managing volatility and profits in yo-yo markets. Sean encourages you to invite a guest to attend. He will even pick up the tab for their breakfasts.

Roget Grant of Identicor attended this morning to prepare for his guest appearance on November 5th (Naming & Banding your Business).

Sean Baylis was also the source of the line of the day: “I have taken over Andy’s paper route.’

Members:

Brett Bain.  “I hate you and my job but hey, can you do me a big favour?” An exit interview with an ungrateful employee left Brett shaking his head, especially when the offensive dude asked Brett to keep him on OSI’s Apple licence (the departing employee wanted to be able to claim to be Apple certified ).

Sean Baylis. 1. M&A activities may indicate that markets could be at, or near, the bottom. 2. He’s watching Imperial oil, Canadian Oil Sands and Mega Energy with interest.

Jim Bladon.

Paul Boucher. When next in Regina, go to the Taphouse. Good food but dear! Oh yes, so dear. • As hi-tech as Paul’s studio is, he elected to fly to Regina to voice 17 scripts for a client there. In person, face-to-face meetings still matter. Just watch: Paul’s airfare investment will come back to him in spades.

Greg Callander .

Ian Campbell.  My kids are famous on Google Earth. • I just peddled 330 K on the Cabot Trail. • Now I’m waiting for the city to approve the move of my clinic across the parking lot. (Could be a long wait.)

Don Davis. He and Pat arrived in NYC on the same Friday the Pope arrived. Then they experienced the traffic that accompanied Obama’s visit on Saturday. Which was followed by the visits of Putin and the President of China, on Sunday. More traffic. • What I want to know is: did Pat and Don have fish for dinner?

Todd Dean . Google deepens: Todd discovered yet another level of service that the big G offers. Surprised be was. And delighted.

George Doherty.

Don Doolan. Whining about the high prices of fine homes in Kelowna. (That’s how you spell ’wine-ing’, right?)

Ken Eades.

Tony Fisher. Quiet today.

Gord Forsyth.

Mel Gibson.

Henry Heuver.

David Hicks.

Bill Hoogstratten.

Dan Kennelly. What happened to the word ‘human’ in the title, Human Resources? Management 101 by Cenovus: they told everyone to be at their desk at a certain time and to expect an email. Those being laid off were informed of same and given 15 minutes to leave the premises. Those keeping their jobs were summoned to a meeting to see who else was left to do all the work. (Acerbic Lockhart suggested that this is what happens … when engineers run a company.) • Dan was at the Beverly Wiltshire Hotel where a fellow guest had so many fine autos, his valet fees were $14K a day!

Randy Kott. Real estate is keeping him busy, he says. (Not to split hairs but it may be the quality of his service that’s keeping him busy.)

Keith Kozak. Market is moving along. • Had kudos for Brett’s computer services for both PC and Apple.

Matt Litke.

Andy Lockhart. It’s good. It’s bad. But then it’s a DI day. First, there’s starting the planning process, at city hall, for the Hotel. (Well, applying to get it started.) And then there’s the burning of the mortgage for Sundial apartments.

J.D. MacDonald.

Michael McLennan.  What’s not to like? Finally, true remote monitoring for office devices enables scheduled maintenance and lower inventory costs. (Saving about $75,000.)

Ross Mikkelsen.  Prices are like smoke: they’re rising.

Mike Mikkelson.  Took command of this morning’s meeting. • Mentioned that Lethbridge business pace is slow – but then, it always has been, so maybe …

Gerry Parcells. Sad to see Apache (printing) go under. • Also sad to see new homes selling for $800,000.

Bruce Roblin .

Dwayne Vinck. Stay tuned for ‘BroTalk’, a Kids Help Phone initiative to encourage boys to use the service. Girls are calling for help but boys have different issues and have been holding back. Maybe BroTalk will get them talking. Details at:

Bob Wiggins. While enjoying Fairmont, he and Dorothy checked out Gerry’s, Mel’s and Mike’s places.

Chris Wright . There is a first time for everything. There really is. People are pre-paying their taxes this year. And yes, Chris is recommending the practice for some.
