Early Birds, August 19, 2021

Gentlemen,

If Delta holds off, this will be the second-last virtual meeting, with in-person Early Birds resuming at Inglewood on Thursday September 2nd. Dwayne Vinck will update us if that changes.

The travails of retail were front and centre this week with cogent observations from Tony Fisher and Ross Mikkelsen

Tony also updated the status of George Doherty and indicated how we could show our support, while cautioning us not to expect a response. Tony also added a nice quick story about Roger Jarvis.

Leisure related notes included two book recommendations from Andy Lockhart:

Accessory To War - by Neil deGrasse Tyson and Avis Lang

“Extraordinary.… A feast of history, an expert tour through thousands of years of war and conquest.” —Jennifer Carson, New York Times Book Review

In this far-reaching foray into the millennia-long relationship between science and military power, acclaimed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-author Avis Lang examine how the methods and tools of astrophysics have been enlisted in the service of war. Spanning early celestial navigation to satellite-enabled warfare, Accessory to War is a richly researched and provocative examination of the intersection of science, technology, industry, and power that will introduce Tyson’s millions of fans to yet another dimension of how the universe has shaped our lives and our world.

Available at the library or via Pages in Kensington (click on the picture)  among other fine bookstores.

Empire of Pain - The Secret History Of The Sackler Dynasty

A grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin, by the prize-winning, bestselling author of Say Nothing.

Again, available at the pubic library or via your favourite bookstore. Clicking the picture will take you to mine - Pages in Kensington.
